Understanding the new GRI Standards: The Carbon Bullshit Buster!

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Greenhouse gas emissions and climate change impacts are common aspects of organisations’ reporting.  What are the practical implications of the GRI 3: 2021 Standard for assessing impacts and reporting material topics?...Actually, scratch that. Let's take a different approach:

How often do you look beyond the surface of claims like:

  • Carbon-neutral
  • Carbon-zero
  • Net-zero
  • Carbon-positive
  • Carbon-negative
  • Carrot-broccoli Zero?

If you're one of the few people that actually checks the credibility of such claims, you'll be well aware that a concerning number fall way below the level of ambition we need. And some are just carrot-broccoli mash.

For most of the companies we work with, and for most companies in general, carbon emissions will be a material topic under the new GRI Standards. As a result, many companies will respond with targets, products or initiatives that claim to address their emissions. But how do we know whether these claims are meaningful or meaningless? Quite often, we don't.

So, in this Lunch 'n' Learn we will:

  • Test our carbon bullshit detector with a few real world examples.
  • Learn the essential ingredients for a meaningful carbon claim.

...

GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) is the world’s most widely used sustainability and ESG standard for reporting non-financial performance. Central to GRI is the materiality principle, ensuring organizations report on the issues that matter most.

As of 1st January 2023, organizations reporting in accordance with GRI will need to adopt the new GRI 3:2021 Material Topics standard to identify and assess material topics. What’s changed?  The updated standard:

  • Focuses on identifying and assessing specific impacts
  • Implements an impact assessment scoring methodology
  • Requires disclosure about how the most significant impacts are managed

Having supported a range of clients to adopt the updated standard this year, we’d like to share what we’ve learned so to help others accelerate their journey and navigate the changes with ease.

Join Proxima and some special guests for a short, sharp and interactive session that will help you understand what the new standards are all about and what the next steps for reporting organizations should be!

12.25pm to 1.00pm. BYO lunch and questions.
