Event description

Join the United Nations Association of New Zealand at Premier House on October 27th from 5:30pm onwards as we celebrate and reflect on the United Nations and its work at our annual UN Day reception.

The keynote speaker will be The Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Palmer, 33rd Prime Minister of New Zealand and a member of the United Nations Environment Programme Global 500 Roll of Honour. Sir Geoffrey will be sharing his thoughts on strengthening the United Nations, the importance of multilateralism and the rules-based system, as well as his personal reflections on his engagement with the United Nations system. Canapes and drinks are included in the ticket price.

This year's UN Day also marks the 20th Anniversary of the We The People's Foundation, of which UNA NZ is a beneficiary. Hayden Montgomerie, Chair of the Foundation, will also deliver a short speech about the Foundation's history and future plans.

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. United Nations Day provides an opportunity each year to reflect on and celebrate the need to recommit ourselves to multilateralism, the United Nations and the many institutions under the UN umbrella which seek to improve our world. This year marks the 77th anniversary since this occasion was first marked in 1945. At the event, the National President will provide an update on the work being done by the United Nations Association of New Zealand to address global issues in Aotearoa, such as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The United Nations Association of New Zealand -Te Roopu Whakakotahi Whenua o Aotearoa (UNA NZ) is a voluntary organisation committed to the ideals embodied in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the crucial role of the UN at the centre of multilateral cooperation to promote world peace and justice, and to eradicate poverty and hunger. We recognise that the UN has far to go to achieve its objectives, and are committed to its improvement. To learn more about UNA NZ visit our website www.unanz.org.nz or follow us on social media.

Note: Based on the regulations of Premier House, a list of attendees is required 1 week in advance of the event for security vetting purposes.
