The Canberra Restorative Community are delighted to be part of an international coalition hosting ‘Contemporary Restorative Practice- from awareness to practice to transformation from the 20th- 23rd November this year in Canberra.

As part of a series of conference 'fringe' activities, we have obtained philanthropic funding to support of the United Ngunnawal Elders Council to welcome other First Nations visitors in the spirit of healing, liberation and learning from the oldest living cultures gifts of restorative practices.

This Welcome to Country Event is supported by the Canberra Restorative Community thanks to the NED Foundation.

It is an opportunity The United Ngunnawal Elders to welcome visiting Elders from other Nations in Australia and overseas prior the opening of the International Restorative Conference in Canberra.

We are thrilled to have a strong First Nations conference stream, and we have learnt there will be delegates attending from many different Nation Groups from around Australia and globally. We are especially aware of a group of Noongar Elders who are traveling with Ngunnawal Adjunct Professor Sharynne Hamilton, who will be yarning about keeping their children safe from child protection. This event will enable culture and customary protocols of respect for First Nations visitors to be welcomed and to meet with Ngunnawal Elders and build collaborations to strengthen communities. Non-Indigenous community are also welcome.

Background about why this is important to the Canberra Restorative Community

Canberra’s place as an international site of restorative research and imagination in the 1990’s has developed into a broader practice and research community through the forging of international Restorative Cities , of which Canberra, through the Canberra Restorative Community , is part.

Launched in July 2015 in the ACT Legislative Assembly, by then Attorney-General, Simon Corbell, the Canberra Restorative Community is committed firstly, to repairing and healing relationships with the Traditional Custodians of Canberra, the Ngunnawal peoples.

The United Ngunnawal Elders Council and Ngunnawal Elders have been a continuing and deeply respected source of knowledge and guidance for the Canberra Restorative Community in our day-to-day activities and relationships across our community and through teaching, leading and collaborating in research collaborations and the promotion of restorative practice approaches across diverse areas of social policy and legislative challenges. Restorative justice approaches have much to offer, especially where Indigenous strengths are oppressed and intergenerational social disadvantage is deeply entrenched - areas such as health, education, child protection, justice and social identity. Our Canberra Restorative Community constantly strives to amplify silenced and oppressed voices from across the range of human experiences here in the nation’s capital, and to support innovation, principled relationships and when possible, to influence policy makers to trial authentic restorative approaches at local and national levels. Local cost-benefit analyses show substantial savings per dollar investment – ranging from a saving of anywhere between four to eleven dollars through the use of these approaches.
