Unlocking the Power of the Vagus Nerve: Its Crucial Role in Mental Health
Event description
In this two hour workshop you will:
- Understand how the vagus nerve affects mental health, including its effects on: mood, self esteem, social interaction, engagement with the world, processing trauma, and diagnoses such as sensory processing disorder, anxiety, ADHD, & ASD.
- Understand how the vagus nerve is activated in normal development for a child, and what stresses can interfere with that development.
- Learn how a chronic stress response can be from an under-active or “worn out” vagus nerve.
- Learn to identify patterns, past stresses, and “Red Flags” to look for in children and within their family systems and how the vagus nerve can impact the family as a whole.
- Understand the effects the vagus nerve has on physical health in families.
2 hours of Continuing Education (two hours cultural competency, one hour ethics)approved by MN Board of Marriage & Family Therapy and MN Board of Behavioral Health & Therapy

10:00am-10:10am: Introduction of Dr. Tye’s background
10:10-10:30 am: What the vagus nerve does and overview of the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic vs parasympathetic)
10:30-10:45 am: How to tell if the vagus nerve is affected (objectively and subjectively)
10:45-11:15 am: Why does the vagus nerve get thrown off
11:15-11:30am: Break
11:30am-12pm: What to do to support the vagus nerve
12-12:15 pm: Discussion and Q&A
