Unravelled: threads, language, jewellery
Event description
An exhibition of new work by transdisciplinary artist and academic Tassia Joannides. Drawing on previous sculptural works, Tassia returns to smaller, more intimate scales to continue an exploration of the stories and languages of family, gender and memory through a combination of textile jewellery and spoken word poetry. A series of textile necklaces explore the slippages in language formed through lived experiences of diverse diasporic cultures, embedded into textured and textural jewellery that can be worn and carried on the body. Necklace forms that both reveal and unravel moments of the past and present, translate experiences into materials through slow and embodied processes of handwork.
The installation will be accompanied by a short performance, where the artist will ‘read’ the necklaces and invite the audience to share stories of their own language and culture, encouraging wider discourses on diversity, inclusion and connection and providing opportunities for sharing, empathy and understanding.
