NUNU’s Art and Culture collective, with funding from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, will produce a series of cultural discussion tables on contemporary Louisiana cultures and communities starting this fall.

Louisiana boasts a vibrant cultural tapestry woven from the threads of African, French, Native American, Haitian, German, and Spanish culture. The Rebirth Grant - funded "Louisiana's Tapestry" discussion series explores the depth and diversity of these interwoven cultures and subcultures within the state.

The free afternoon events will take place one Saturday per month beginning in October. Each 1-2 hour open event will include open discussion tables, a guest presentation, and a moderated Q&A.  Events will open with a short discussion with the invited speaker sharing their thread of Louisiana’s contemporary culture. A Q&A moderated by cultural researcher Hali Dardar will further explore how this thread braids into the fabric of our community. This weaving will continue with open discussion tables with guiding question prompts to better connect and share with the attending community.

"Unveiling Louisiana's Tapestry aims to promote inclusivity and celebrate the diverse

voices,” Said Tapestry’s Project Manager David P. Morrow, “We hope each of these events can create afternoons of conversations and exploration to weave a rich story of what contributes to Louisiana's unique spirit."

Over the five months of programming, the series will deepen understanding of Louisiana's multifaceted identity, support existing language and cultural initiatives, and spark new conversations. Themes include specific cultural aspects like music, cuisine, traditions, and historical figures, with a focus on African, Irish, Indigenous, Latin, and French influences.

While "Unveiling Louisiana's Tapestry" is designed as a limited series, the project's impact and resources will have a lasting effect through the efforts of the NUNU Arts and Culture Collective.  Sign up for our newsletter to stay updated at nunucollective.org
