Who Can Join? - Do you need to be a Biotechnology student to join the society?

Not at all! UQBTS is open to students from all disciplines. Our members come from biotechnology, engineering, biomedical science, and across STEM. Biotech lives at the crossroads of these fields, so the more perspectives, the better!

Commitment Period - How much time does being a member take? Can I join even if I’m busy?

Accepted Answer

As much or as little as you want! There’s no minimum commitment; you’re free to attend only the events that interest you and fit your schedule. That said, you’ll get the most out of your membership by joining events that align with your goals.Members enjoy discounted event tickets, and membership also unlocks perks like access to mentorship programs and priority sign-ups for limited-capacity events such as lab tours and industry visits.

Academic & Career Opportunities - Will this help with careers or internships? Do you work with industry partners? Are there research or lab opportunities?

Yes! UQBTS works closely with a range of industry and research partners, including companies such as Thermo Fisher Scientific (Patheon), Vaxxas, Southern RNA, and organisations like IDEA Bio, as well as research institutions including the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) and the Translational Research Institute (TRI).Our industry nights and lab tours are designed to help members network, learn about different career pathways, and get a clearer sense of the research or industry environments they may want to pursue. These events can be a valuable stepping stone toward internships, summer or winter research programs, or connecting with potential Honours, Master’s, or PhD supervisors.Nothing is ever guaranteed, but being involved gives you real exposure, useful insights, and connections that can make your next move a lot clearer (and a lot less intimidating)!

Membership Cost - How much does membership cost? What do I get with my membership?

Membership is $12 for the year or $7 per semester. That’s just $1 a month for a full year of access to events, opportunities, and member perks.As a member, you get access to our mentorship program, early access to event tickets before they go live, and priority sign-ups for limited-capacity events. Members also get exclusive merchandise deals, available when you sign up as a member on Market Day!

Getting More Involved - What’s the society culture like? Is it more academic or social?

Members can apply to become General Executives, Officers, or Top 3 (T3) members. Attending events is a great way to get familiar with how the society runs, especially if you’re interested in helping plan and lead events of your own.We encourage our executives to take ownership of their events, from initial planning all the way through to execution. General Executive positions typically open each semester, depending on interest and availability, while Officer and T3 roles are elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the end of the academic year.Stick around, get involved, and you’ll have opportunities to contribute, lead, and help shape the society over time.
