Urban Sketching Workshops: Sydney with Peter Richards
Event description
Two workshops are offered. Come to either or come to both.
Workshop 1
Looking and seeing: choosing the view, around Circular Quay 9.30am until 12.00pm
The hardest part of completing a great urban sketch is finding the best view. This workshop will focus on ways to see and observe the urban environment and how to compose and then complete great urban sketches. We will prepare many quick small-scale sketches with coloured pencils and pens in one or two colours, looking at shapes and tones as much as lines, finding a foreground and background, depth and contrast, and how the built environment meets the sky.
Bring your favourite pens, pencils and a sharpener. Paper will be supplied.
Workshop 2
Sketching on the move: capturing scenes quickly from a ferry between Circular Quay, McMahon’s Point, Balmain East and Circular Quay.
1.30pm, until 4.00pm
A useful skill with sketching is to draw unselfconsciously and the best way to develop this skill is to sketch quickly, sometimes while moving, and sketching the same scene more than once. Drawing small around A7 in size helps. In this workshop, we will prepare many small-scale sketches with coloured pencils and pens while travelling on a ferry, looking at shapes and tones as much as lines. All this is good practice to develop skills and confidence.
Bring your favorite coloured pencils, a sharpener and pens. Paper will be supplied.
Please note that ferry fares and refreshments are not included. We will find a convenient location for lunch for those who want to come.
