Using a positive Behaviour Approach in the Classroom :

Professional Development In Focus Workshop

Comforted by routines and predictability, finding joy in an area of interest or engagement in repetitive movement, a desire for rules and certainty can be characteristics of autism. During this workshop, an experienced educator will explore how autism can present in the classroom setting, and will guide participants through a range of practical strategies that can be implemented to support the creation of a cohesive classroom environments, including:

  • Enhancing communication; 
  • Structured environments;
  • Clear rules and expectations;
  • Providing choice and control;
  • Incorporating interests;
  • Schedules and routines;
  • Reinforcement schedules;
  • Breaks; and
  • Reactive strategies

All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).

Workshop Definitions:

General Workshops are designed to give participants a better understanding of autism.  They present a broad range of effective strategies that participants can use to improve their practice when working with individuals on the spectrum. These workshops are suited to participants who have not attended previous Autism SA workshops.

In Focus Workshops are designed for participants who have a good general knowledge and understanding of autism. These sessions are for those wanting to enhance their professional practice by developing skills to support individuals in specific areas relating to autism. It is recommended that participants first attend a General Workshop prior to attending an In Focus Workshop.

Autism SA has a highly experienced and diverse training team which includes consultants, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and facilitators who have extensive experience in working with individuals on the autism spectrum in a range of settings.
