Event description

Join us for a free screening of 'Takayna / Tarkine – the Heart of Lutruwita', a powerful documentary about the fight to protect one of the last wild temperate rainforests. The evening includes catered refreshments and a panel of University of Sydney experts on why nature matters for the future of education, biodiversity and sustainability leadership.

Following refreshments, the event begins with a free screening of Takayna / Tarkine – the Heart of Lutruwita, a visually striking documentary that follows the fight to protect one of the last wild temperate rainforests on Earth. Set in northwest lutruwita / Tasmania and championed by the Bob Brown Foundation, the film weaves sweeping cinematic landscapes with personal stories of resistance and cultural connection, serving as both a tribute and a call to action. Takayna invites audiences to witness the beauty of this threatened place, reflect on what it means to stand up for nature, and feel the urgency of the ongoing campaign to secure its long-term protection.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with University of Sydney academics whose work is helping to guide how nature is brought into institutional decision making. Grounded in the University’s application of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework, the panel will explore how we identify and respond to nature-related risks and opportunities, and how this supports a broader shift towards nature-focused ways of working across research, teaching, operations and engagement.

Together, they’ll reflect on why placing nature at the centre of decision making matters for the future of biodiversity, sustainability and education itself.
