UTS WiEIT October Holiday Workshop
Event description
We are hosting Holiday Workshops for Year 5-11 students! See below for what projects are on offer.
All projects will take place on UTS Ultimo Campus and are completely free of charge. As a gender equity program, this program is for girls, young women, and gender diverse students.
Start the day developing new skills in engineering and technology before identifying a problem to solve. Build solutions in teams and share them with your family. We welcome girls at all points on their STEM journey – all workshops will start with the basics.
Your place will be confirmed by email one week before the workshops begin, including details for the day.
Students will need to bring a packed lunch, or can purchase lunch at the food court on campus.

Workshops on offer for each year group:
Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6)
The Wonderful Fluorescent Massive World of Tiny Invisible Things
Come with us on a journey to discover the three basic domains of life. Dr. Yan Liao will introduce us to Archaea and what makes her unique. With microscopes you will see real Archaea and do an experiment to discover more about her so you can create your own Archaea character with animation artist Amelia Farrell.
This workshop is part of an Australian Research Council project aiming to address the problem of women’s participation in STEM by creating animated hybrid documentary science stories featuring ground-breaking women scientists for use in schools. For more information:

Using Biomedical Engineering design, you will create a device to support someone living with one of these conditions.
Stage 5+ (Year 9, 10 and 11)
"Mind Reading" - Sensing Brain waves with Arduino.
In this workshop, you will be shown step by step how to use an EEG, a device that senses electrical signals in your brain, and program an Arduino to turn things on and off with your mind.
