Calving management and Neonate care in Dairy Cattle

The training of the farm personnel has positive impacts on animal welfare and performance, thus increasing the overall farm profitability. To support beef and dairy farms and their employees, the UW-Extension Dairy Program has developed the “Calving Management Practices and Neonate Care in Dairy Cattle” workshop.

This program will help farm personnel recognize the imminent signs of birth and the calving process, provide guidelines for calving management practices to reduce the prevalence of stillbirth and health issues in cows, be able to determine when first-calf heifers or cows need assistance at calving, and the importance of calf management and neonate care after calving. And the importance of the transition cow nutrition as a method of disease prevention and welfare.

Additionally, there will be a Hands-On demonstration, during which attendees will have the opportunity to practice calving events on a cow model and learn guidelines for calving management practices. 

The workshop training features:

• Dr. Lautaro Rostoll Cangiano, Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences - UW Madison

• Dr. JP Martins, Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Science at the School of Veterinary - UW Madison

• M.Sc. Manuel Peña, bilingual regional dairy educator from Sheboygan, Dodge, Fond du Lac, and Ozaukee counties.

• M.Sc. Alison Pfau, bilingual regional dairy educator from Dane, Jefferson, Rock, and Walworth counties.

El entrenamiento del personal de la granja genera impactos positivos en el bienestar y el rendimiento del animal, aumentando así la rentabilidad de la granja. Para apoyar a los granjeros y trabajadores de granjas de carne y lecheras, el área de extensión de la UW-Madison ha desarrollado un taller  llamado “Practicas del manejo del parto y cuidado del neonato en el ganado lechero”.

Este programa ayudará a los trabajadores de reconocer los signos inminentes del parto, proveer guías sobre las prácticas de manejo del parto para reducir la prevalencia de mortinatos e identificar y tratar la metritis, tener la capacidad de determinar el tiempo adecuado para asistir un parto y ser capaz de tomar decisiones acertadas.

Adicionalmente, los participantes tendrán un entrenamiento práctico/teórico.
