About the Research
Diversity is both a news value and something that audiences value in news. The Value of Diversity in News and Newsrooms project investigated audience perceptions of diversity in news stories as well as diversity in the journalism industry, which are interrelated but have rarely been examined together. The presentation will report findings from an online survey of audiences including culturally or linguistically diverse respondents, a online survey and interviews with journalists across Australia. The research suggests creating diversity in the news industry is not simply about producing news that is relevant to wider audiences but also hiring practice to ensure a diversity of news producers and addressing the diversity in the community.
