Event description

The Vietnamese and First Peoples Yarn brings together first and second generation Vietnamese migrants with those who have been connected to Country for thousands of generations. This is the first in a series of opportunities to ask questions and share stories about the differences, similarities and relationships between Vietnamese and Indigenous people in Australia. The discussion topics will include elders and ancestors, legacy, community, truth telling, the Voice to parliament and what it means to belong.

This Vietnamese Australian Forum will feature activists, artists and academics:

  • Matilda Bani is from the Wagadagam tribe in the Torres Strait and has over three decades of expertise in community engagement and development in and around Brisbane.
  • Glen “Walangiiyn” Lindh is an artist from the Wiradjuri people and qualified educator who works with educational institutions to embed First Nations perspectives.
  • Huong Truong is a baby of refugees, committed to justice for First Nations people in Australia. She works for Democracy in Colour and the Greens and was a Victorian member of parliament.
  • Kim Huỳnh (facilitator) is an ANU academic, ABC Radio Canberra presenter and author of Where the Sea Takes Us: A Vietnamese-Australian Story.
