Event description

Join us at historic West Overton Village for our immersive Vintage Film Photography Workshops. These workshops will provide a rare opportunity to take photographs with vintage medium format cameras while learning about composition, lighting, camera technology, and the fascinating history of photography using West Overton’s archives.

Each 3.5 hour workshop is limited to just five participants to provide one-on-one instruction. Participants will borrow a vintage medium format camera for the day and will shoot two rolls of film – one color and one black-and-white. West Overton will have the film developed after the workshop, and participants will receive scans of their photographs and original negatives.

The workshops will include presentations about photography techniques, including special considerations for black-and-white and color photography. Participants will have free time to photograph the beautiful grounds of West Overton and be inspired by a variety of subjects, including the 1838 Overholt Homestead, the 1859 distillery / gristmill, several barns, and gardens.

Medium format film photography was popular during the first half of the 1900s, but today it is an almost forgotten craft. This type of photography uses special types of cameras and high resolution film to produce detailed images. Participants do not need to have prior experience or own any equipment to participate. Beginners welcome!

Because space is limited, please register in advance. The $60 registration fee includes two rolls of film, development, scanning, and shipping.

Session Dates:

  • Thursday, September 25 - 4:00 - 7:30 pm

  • Friday, September 26 - 4:00 - 7:30 pm

  • Saturday, September 27 - 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

After clicking "Register," you will be prompted to select your session date.

This program is supported by the Westmoreland County Local Arts Grant Program and Steve Overholt. The Film Photography Project has also donated four medium format cameras to use in the workshops.
