BRAHMS Violin Concerto
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4
Featuring Andrew Haveron, Concertmaster, Sydney Symphony Orchestra
***
Sydney Symphony Orchestras Concertmaster and world-renowned soloist, Andrew Haveron makes his SYO debut with Brahms’ beloved Violin Concerto in a concert conducted by Alexander Briger AO.
For an avowed solitary like Johannes Brahms, the Violin Concerto is an almost uniquely collaborative venture, written with the constant monitoring and advice of his best friend (and world-renowned virtuoso on the instrument) Joseph Joachim, who gave the first performance under Brahms’ baton in 1879. It’s the definitive portrait of the composer, contrasting late-night lyricism with Tokay-swilling Magyar fireworks.
The prickly German shares our menu with the composer of his time who was no great fan – Tchaikovsky. The Russian’s Symphony No 4 charts an existential battle with Fate, featuring an all-string pizzicato third movement plus one of the most thrilling symphonic finales in the repertoire, completing a program of unparalleled instrumental virtuosity.
