Special Presentation: Budget Priorities for building a Consumer-centered Mental Health System
The presentation will focus on the three priority areas identified by VMIAC and the relevant recommendations of the Royal Commission, with a specific emphasis on the budgetary implications and funding requirements identified as necessary. The priorities are:
- 1. The 2024-2025 budget should prioritise funding for the establishment of ‘Our Agency’, as recommended by the Royal Commission, to ensure meaningful consumer engagement and leadership in the mental health system.
- 2. The LLEW should be further supported and funded, with a focus on recruiting workers from priority populations and expanding their roles and disciplines to strengthen the consumer-focused and equitable nature of the mental health system.
- 3. Funding for foundational supports for people psychosocial disability should be increased, with a particular emphasis on community-led supports, training and upskilling of staff, and building sector awareness to improve referral and connection pathways between health services and foundational support services.
The presentation will be followed by a Q+A and general discussion.
