Voice to Parliament Yarn 2023
Event description
Come Yarn with Red Dust as we discuss the Voice to Parliament
Many Australians have heard about the Uluru Statement from the Heart and an Indigenous Voice to Parliament but aren’t sure what it is or what it means to them or their fellow Australians. As the largest consensus of First Nations peoples on a proposal for substantive recognition in Australian history, the road to the Uluru Statement from the Heart is a long one even without mentioning the decades of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander activism that came before it.
Develop the mindset and confidence to be an active ally, by joining us in a 60-minute discussion on the Voice to Parliament.
In this Yarn, we draw on the perspectives of Indigenous Australian and non-Indigenous Australians to learn about the Uluru Statement of the Heart’s invitation to walk with Indigenous Australians in a movement for a better future. Our facilitators will draw on their personal and professional lived experiences to explore the key elements of the Uluru Statement from the Heart – a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution, a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making and truth-telling about our history.
We will delve into the key elements that underpin the Uluru Statement of the Heart and the impact it has on the future of First Nations Australians.
What will we focus on?
- The history and context of the Voice to Parliament as proposed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
- The reasons a Voice to Parliament is being proposed.
- What a Voice to Parliament can do and what it can’t do
- The referendum question and why a change to the constitution is necessary.
- Proposals by Indigenous experts for the implementation model of the Voice to Parliament if the referendum is successful.
- The diversity of views and support for the Voice Referendum amongst First Nations people.
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to learn, connect, and be a part of the conversation!
