2021 has seen a series of revelations about how women are treated in politics and public life more generally - from documentaries such as Ms Represented and Strong Female Lead to allegations of rape against Christian Porter and parliamentary staffer, Bruce Lehrmann.

Since 2006, Australia has dropped from from 12th to 70th out of 156 countries in terms of women's economic participation and opportunity; from 57th to 99th in terms of women's health and survival, and from 32nd to 54th in terms of women's political empowerment.[1]

At the same time there is evidence that when there is greater diversity in positions of leadership from company Boards to Parliaments, outcomes are better.

What are the barriers to gender equality and female leadership? How do we overcome them? How is female leadership different and what do women want from our leaders, be they male or female?

Meet the panelists:

Nicole Livingstone

Nicole Livingstone represented Australia at three Olympics.
Aa a champion Backstroker, she was a member of the Australian swimming team for twelve consecutive years from 1985 - 1996. Her career achievements include a silver medal and two bronze medals from three Olympic appearances; six gold, two silver and a bronze from three Commonwealth Games and competing in six Pan Pacific Championships winning four gold two silver and one bronze medals. She also broke a world record in the 200m backstroke (short course) in 1992.

Nicole retired from competitive swimming in 1996 and began what has been a career in media with Channel Nine and then Network Ten Sport .

Nicole is also making her mark in the world of business. Since 2017, Nicole has been at the helm of Women's Football for the AFL, overseeing the incredible growth in participation which now boasts close to 600,000 women and girls playing Australia's indigenous football game.

Nicole has previously held board positions with Ovarian Cancer Australia, ASADA,VicHealth, Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Australian Olympic Committee, and is a current Director of Swimming Australia.

Angela Pippos

Angela Pippos is an award-winning journalist, presenter, documentary-maker and author.

Her most recent documentary, The Record, follows Australia’s dramatic Women’s T20 World Cup campaign, and the audacious bid to fill the MCG for the final on International Women’s Day 2020. Angela has also produced two documentaries about the rise of women in Australian football: League of her Own (Seven Network) and Heroes (ABC).

Angela writes thought-provoking columns about sport, gender equality and culture. Now on its third reprint, her book, Breaking The Mould – Taking a Hammer to Sexism in Sport provides a fascinating insight into the changing Australian sporting landscape, and the role we can all play in making it fairer for girls and women.

Angela is a regular contributor to ABC Radio and a co-host on Broad Radio. She has an Honours degree in Politics from the University of Adelaide and a Journalism degree from the University of South Australia.

Angela anchored the sport segment on ABC TV News Victoria for a decade.

Mikaela is the founding CEO of social enterprise, WomenCAN Facilities Services and charity WomenCAN Australia. WomenCAN helps isolated and vulnerable women reclaim their financial independence.

Mikaela is also an MBA-qualified lawyer with a deep and long standing commitment to the environment and a Myer Fellow. She spent many years in corporate settings providing insurance, risk, governance and regulatory compliance advice. She has served as a company director on government boards & industry associations, including CERES Environmental Park, where she served as Deputy Chair from 2018-2020. During this time, she helped guide the strategic direction of the Park and fostered external relationships that further strengthened the financial position of the Park.
