ABOUT OUR WORKSHOP

From Ecuador to New Zealand, from the Kimberley to the Mornington Peninsular, more people are advocating for nature to be recognised as a living entity and to have a stronger legal voice. Join us for a workshop that introduces the key concepts around Rights of Nature and Earth laws.

This workshop aims to provide an introduction to one of the fastest growing legal movements in the world. Join the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) for a fascinating and enjoyable introduction to Earth-centred law and governance.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Anyone and everyone who's interested in this topic should join the workshop.
This workshop is aimed at a general audience, as well as people with a legal background.  All legal terms will be clearly explained and demystified.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS

Dr Michelle Maloney, (BA/LLB(Hons),PhD) - Co-Founder and National Convenor, Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA). Michelle is recognised as one of the world's leading experts on Earth jurisprudence, Earth laws, Rights of Nature and legal personhood for nature. Michelle co-founded the Australian Earth Laws Alliance in 2011, and has been working for more than a decade to advocate for Earth centred governance and systems change, with a focus on law, economics, education, ethics and culture change.  Prior to creating AELA, Michelle worked for 20 years on environmental law, sustainability and Indigenous/First Peoples' initiatives in Australia, and around the world. Michelle is a gifted communicator and can share information about complex legal issues in a way that everyone can understand and enjoy.

This event will be facilitated by Christina Meyers. Christina has a Bachelor of Business and Law (Hons) from Queensland University of Technology. She was admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2019, and has worked for five years in private legal practice, and three years with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science. She has worked with Brisbane City Councillor Jonathan Sri as a Policy Officer, and with the LGBTI Legal Service as a law reform assistant. Christina began working with AELA in March 2020, as a Project Officer in AELA’s Law and Regulation Team and now leads projects for the Australian Earth Laws Centre, including coordinating the 'Ecocide Laws Australia' Working Group and 'Stop Ecocide International (Australia Branch)'. Christina’s research interests include Indigenous First Laws, rights of nature and ecocide law, and she loves contributing to AELA’s multi-disciplinary work. Christina is passionate about creating Earth centred systems change and recently completed a Systems Change course with Erfan Daliri. Christina lives in Brisbane, Queensland.
