Jimmy Grant Blues En Mineur

Description

Voyage Hot Club: Django Meets French Chanson

Award-winning violinist Eva Slongo and guitarist Jimmy Grant present an intimate and swinging set rooted in the gypsy jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. For this concert they’re joined by special guest Simon Planting. Their music draws equally from European jazz, Eastern European folk influences, and classic vocal jazz, resulting in a sound that feels both timeless and accessible to modern audiences.

A defining element of their collaboration is the integration of vocals. In addition to her virtuosic violin playing, Eva incorporates scat singing and vocal improvisation in a subtle, musical style reminiscent of George Benson. At times she sings while playing, adding a distinctive and engaging layer that resonates strongly with jazz audiences.

Their repertoire includes French chanson, swing standards, and original arrangements that evoke travel, nostalgia, and joy. Expect a warm, dynamic performance that emphasizes groove, melody, and connection.

  • Jimmy Grant

Jimmy Grant grew up in a Northern California household rich with musical influences. During his travels across the country with his dad’s bluegrass band, he discovered the music of Django Reinhardt. Although his early musical landscape was shaped by Russian folk, bluegrass, Celtic, and classical music, he was irresistibly drawn to the vibrant sounds of Django Reinhardt from a young age. Under the guidance of renowned guitarists Jim Nichols and Howard Alden, Jimmy honed his craft, blending influences from Bach, Benny Goodman, and Joe Pass into his unique style. His artistry has led him to perform alongside acclaimed musicians such as David Grisman, Gonzalo Bergara, Ludovic Beier, Andreas Oberg, Tim Kliphuis, Paulus Schafer, Robin Nolan, Trio Dinicu, Rhythm Future Quartet, and the Hot Club of San Francisco. His performances have graced prestigious stages including Djangofest Northwest, The Savannah Music Festival, Nor Cal Jazz Festival, and The New York Hot Jazz Festival, as well as various venues throughout Europe. As a passionate educator, Jimmy has taught at colleges across the United States and has been a faculty member at the Django in June Festival in Massachusetts, Grappelli-Django Camp in Holland, and currently hosts his own "Camp Django" in Ashland, OR. He shares his insights into gypsy jazz through contributions to "Gypsy Jazz Secrets Magazine." Jimmy's creative endeavors also include recording two albums under his own name, participating in several jazz and rock albums, and having his music featured in films and television. Notably, his original composition "Insomnia" was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition in the jazz category.

  • Eva Slongo

Swiss violinist and singer Eva Slongo grew up in a family of classical musicians and trained as a classical violinist at the conservatory, earning her diplomas before a chance late-night jam in a bar turned her toward jazz improvisation for good. She went on to study jazz violin with Pierre Blanchard in Lausanne and Didier Lockwood in Paris, where she settled, and developed her signature style of improvising on violin while scatting at the same time. In Paris she has shared the stage with Biréli Lagrène, Wawau Adler, Sébastien Giniaux and Ninine Garcia. She recorded the EP Trésor with organist Laurent Coulondre and the quartet album Inspirations featuring Didier Lockwood, won Best Improvisation at the Stéphane Grappelli International Violin Competition in 2011, and took 2nd prize at the Golden Jazz Trophée with her quartet in 2016. She founded the Jazz Violin Academy, an international online school for jazz violin, and today performs across Europe and the Americas with pianist Giovanni Mirabassi (album Souffle, 2022), in a gypsy jazz duo with Jimmy Grant, with Baptiste Bailly, and with the swing quartet Swing 23.
