Event description

The Wagga Aboriginal Justice Conference, co-led by Legal Aid NSW, the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) and the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), is an opportunity to enhance your connections and expand your practice working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in the Riverina, while building stronger partnerships between government organisations, community and legal service providers.

This one half-day community Conference will bring together lawyers, community services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and court users in Wagga Wagga, and highlight practices designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with ongoing court proceedings.

Join us to:

  • Deepen your cultural competency: gain practical insights into culturally safe and appropriate practices for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

  • Support systemic change: learn how your work can contribute to achieving Closing the Gap Target 10 and 11 to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people in custody.

  • Stay informed on local trends: understand the latest programs, services, and community needs.

  • Expand your practice: discover new ways to broaden your practice and better engage with Aboriginal communities through tailored strategies and community partnerships. For lawyers, there are up to 6 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units available.

  • Build stronger partnerships: network with government agencies, legal services, and community organisations to foster collaboration and improve outcomes for First Nations clients.

  • Hear from experts and community leaders: gain firsthand perspectives from those driving change, legal professionals, and Aboriginal Elders.
