Event description

WAGYL EXPERIENCE

The wagyl experience is a coroboree celebration of the indigenous Dreamtime snake like rainbow serpent that carved the rivers into the lands of southwest Western Australia. The Wagyl experience represents the power of nature and the importance of maintaining cultural and environmental harmony. We come together to celebrate its gift of life, sustenance for life, and to the people who are the custodians of its land.

WHAT TO EXPECT

🔥 Bonfire and the smoking ceremony

Central to Aboriginal culture, fire has been used for practical and spiritual purposes. The fire represents the lasting strength of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations. The Wagyl experience will be honouring this flame, with a large-scale wooden sculpture created to honour the serpent that provided our water pathways and elixir of life and return it to the earth in a smoking ceremony and symbolic gesture to the warmth of the land in a controlled burn. In doing so we ignite a renewed commitment to recognising and preserving the cultural heritage that enriches our nation.

Noongar elder of Wagyl Experience

Bimbo Kelly is an Aboriginal elder born in the Badimaya region.
His mother is a Noongar Yued woman from Bindoon, and he has represented communities across regions from Meekatharra to Mandurah.
He has served as chairman of the Winjan Aboriginal Corporation.
Bimbo has also helped provide ‘on-country’ employment and art opportunities for local mob, using his Hospitality and Tourism Certificates III and IV. He was awarded Aboriginal Student of the Year for his efforts.
He facilitated the creation of large-scale art sculptures, such as the Bonu-Wongie (Truth on the Message Stick) of Mandjoogoordap.
This art installation—two hands holding a message stick—represents an invitation from the Winjan Aboriginal Community to the City of Mandurah to work together in unity.
He has been the elder at many Crab Fest events in the region and now resides with the Ballardong people in Northam.
Through his work with Bilya Koort Boodja over many years, Bimbo has led extensive walkabout missions, helping people connect with native bushland while sharing his experience as a tracker and the stories of the land.
His didgeridoos have reached the London Olympics, his musical recordings have made it to chambers in Japan, and his handcrafted boomerangs have been sold worldwide.
Bimbo will be celebrating the Dreamtime story as the voice of the opening ceremony and will conduct both midday and midnight smoking ceremonies during the Saturday show.
His family will also be hosting dance workshops, damper-making classes, and bush tea tastings at the event through the DOTH Stage’s Deadly Workshops.
With over 12 hours of Noongar entertainment and workshops throughout the Wagyl Experience, get ready to immerse yourself in the culture of our traditional custodians and celebrate the Wagyl’s gift of life and sustenance for all who walk this land.
