Walk on Water

We are very excited to present our walk/kayak combo for 2024! Join us as we make our way down the Puhoi River to the Mahurangi Regional Park (West) and meander the coast to our final desination at Opahi. PLEASE DON’T BOOK THIS TRAIL IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH, OR HAVE NO EXPERIENCE OF, PADDLING A KAYAK. YOUR SAFETY IS OUR PARAMOUNT CONCERN.

We’ll take our packs with us in the kayaks so pack light and waterproof. Our trail starts at Puhoi River Kayaks where we catch the outgoing tide for a relaxed and enjoyable paddle downriver to Wenderholm. We’ll paddle to the historic homestead on the northern side of the river where we disembark, take some time to get on our boots, and have a snack and a drink before the walking starts.

Heading north-east, we’ll cross over the hill to Te Muri Beach and walk the paddocks to the north end of the beach, stopping to take in some historic features on the way. After another refreshment break, we’ll cross the Te Muri stream and head up to Cudlip Point.

After a circuit around the point, it’s down to Sullivan’s Bay, up and over to Mita Bay and finally we finish at Opahi Bay where the bus will be waiting for us. If time, tide and conditions allow, there should be a chance for a swim at Te Muri Beach or Sullivan’s Bay.

We'll take our time and enjoy the views, and stop for snacks, lunch and stories along the way – there's no rush. Much of the day is spent on good tracks, but there are some stretches of uneven ground across paddocks, and there are couple of steep hills to negotiate.

This combination of walk and paddle will be very exciting and beautiful, and features an amazing array of rivers, beaches, headlands, bush and stunning vistas. We can’t wait to show you around.
