📚 Site & Rākau Insights
Week 1 – Styx Rongoā Gardens: Koromiko
This hīkoi introduces us to Koromiko, a gentle and calming rākau known for digestive support and internal balance. A great starting point for slowing down, reconnecting with te taiao, and building movement into your routine.
Week 2 – Barnett Park: Kawakawa
Kawakawa, our wairua cleanser and a cornerstone of rongoā practice, helps with inflammation, mamae, and wāhine hauora. This hīkoi moves through coastal and forest edge trails that gently challenge our bodies and strengthen connection to place.
Week 3 – Travis Wetland: Tī Kōuka & Tōtara
Tī Kōuka (cabbage tree) supports digestion and resilience, while Tōtara offers protection, strength, and deep cellular healing. This flat accessible walk is great for whānau and a chance to observe rākau in an urban wetland ecosystem.
Week 4 – Mt Vernon Farm Park: Kānuka / Mānuka
These sister rākau are known for their antimicrobial and skin-healing properties. This is a dry and open landscape, ideal for cardiovascular movement and mindful reflection as you walk among native restoration plantings.
Week 5 – Taylors Mistake: Rimurimu
Rimurimu (seaweed) connects us to Tangaroa and moana nourishment. It is rich in minerals and supports detoxification. This hīkoi invites balance and breath as you move along the coastal hills with expansive ocean views.
Week 6 – Orongomai Trail: Horopito
Horopito is a powerful rākau for circulation and clearing infections. The trail is steep and invigorating, ending the series with a challenge for tinana and hinengaro as we reflect on all the learnings and movement we’ve carried.
