Walking history tour of Waverley Cemetery

Spend an enjoyable morning discovering the breathtaking beauty and wonder of Waverley Cemeteries and find out about the many stories of those who are buried there.

Waverley cemetery is the final resting place of poets, authors, sports people, villians and a plethora of fascinating historical characters!

Join our experienced tour guides as they take you on a fascinating journey through the history of this marvellous site.

Tours are delivered by volunteers from Friends of Waverley Cemeteries (FoWC), Our tours will give you insights into this NSW Heritage Listed site (opened in 1877) and its significance to Australian social history. Over the four walking tours offered you will hear the fascinating stories behind the world-famous Irish Memorial and the headstones of notable figures, from writers and artists to judges and criminals, from politicians and military leaders to sporting heroes. Poet Henry Lawson, cricketer Victor Trumper, Olympic swimmer Fanny Durack and Bulletin editor JF Archibald are some of the famous names to be found among the 90,000 bodies buried here.

Please note that the magnificent physical location of the Cemetery on the cliffs above Bronte means that unfortunately the topography is unsuitable for people with mobility issues, and young children.

All funds raised through these tours are used by the FoWC for memorial restoration work.
