Lets Talk Wānaka - Graham Parker and Tom Reeves - The Kārearea Project / NZ falcon

We are excited to announce guest speakers Graham Parker and Tom Reeves from the Kārearea Project. This talk will focus on the learnings from studying the NZ kārearea (aka NZ falcon, sparrowhawk) in the Upper Clutha basin over the last 8 years.

Despite being an endemic species, with a high threat classification, kārearea have historically been poorly studied. Kārearea have a low population density and face multiple threats that aren't captured in most conservation management. For the last 8 years The Kārearea Project have been monitoring nesting pairs across the Upper Clutha basin with the objective of informing conservation management of kārearea in our region.

The project aims are to estimate the breeding population size, territory size, quantify nest survival rates and causes of nest failures, estimate adult survival rates, and identify management actions that benefit the conservation of this endemic raptor. Come and find out what the Kārearea Project has learned in the first 8 years of this project and the important knowledge gaps that their work has identified that require further attention.
