Description

During Poorneet (Tadpole Season), spring orchids and wildflowers begin emerging across Nillumbik's bushland.

Join Council's expert Biodiversity Officers for a fascinating 1.5-hour guided walk exploring local orchids, wildflowers and the remarkable relationships between plants and their native wasp pollinators. Learn how to identify some of our unique local flora, uncover the extraordinary strategies orchids use to attract pollinators, and discover the ecological connections that support healthy bushland ecosystems. Suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced nature enthusiasts.

What to Expect and Bring

These guided walks are designed for people of all experience levels, from curious beginners to keen naturalists. Led by Council's expert Biodiversity Officers, each walk will explore local plants, wildlife and seasonal changes in the environment, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn about Nillumbik's unique biodiversity.

Walks run for approximately 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace and include sections of uneven ground, natural surfaces and rough bush tracks.

We recommend bringing:

Sturdy enclosed walking shoes
A hat and sun protection
Drinking water
Weather-appropriate clothing
Binoculars and a camera (optional)
iNautralist app installed on your phone (optional)

Access and Inclusion

Council is committed to creating inclusive and welcoming events for everyone. Please note that these walks take place in natural bushland settings and involve walking for approximately 1.5 hours on uneven terrain, including some rough and unsealed tracks. Accessibility varies between locations.

If you have specific access requirements or would like to discuss whether a walk is suitable for your needs, please contact Council environment@nillumbik.vic.gov.au before the event so we can provide further information and support wherever possible. All participants are welcome, regardless of prior knowledge or experience.
