Weaving Workshop | Zenadth Kes style
Event description
Weave traditional styles in this workshop with master weaver Niki Mackie from the Kulkalgal nation in central Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands).
Immerse yourself in Zenadth Kes culture and learn decorative weaving styles using coconut leaf and colourful recycled tape.
The workshop will take place within the exhibition Gotat | Guthath | 時代の潮目 | Tides : a beautiful display of archival photographs of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) people and places from the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka (Japan).
From Niki Mackie: I've been inspired by my late Grandmother (Dad's Mother) & late Aunty (Dad's Sister) to always help and share in weaving. Over 10 years of doing weaving workshops and activities, I've been to colleges, schools, and other events with family/friends and community in Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands) and on the Australian mainland as far south as Brisbane for the State Library of Queensland. As an Indigenous Knowledge Centre coordinator at Poruma Island and a passionate weaver if there is weaving happening I always love to get involved.
