    Event description

A conversation on the challenges and opportunities for action.

The pressure is on for those putting on events to improve their environmental impact, with transport, catering and waste management high on the list of considerations. But with event budgets stretched and questions over who takes responsibility, solutions are often seen as a ‘nice to have’. We know we need more circular systems, but how do we get there?

Bike Auckland has instigated this conversation and invited fellow industry leaders from Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Rescued Kitchen, and Clean Event to join for a webinar on some of the challenges, opportunities and possibilities of working together to make progress on sustainable action in events. Together we present this webinar which will include context and industry developments as well as some success stories.

    Speakers will include:

    • Isabel Emerson - Climate Change & Sustainability Advisor, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited
Isabel manages and delivers various climate and sustainability projects aligning to Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate plan. Working at Tāmaki Makaurau’s economic and cultural agency, she provides climate change and sustainability matter expertise to kaimahi (colleagues), including events such as Lantern, Pasifika, Diwali and FIFA WWC 2023. Prior to this, she managed the 2021 Sustainable Business Awards which recognises and celebrates success in sustainability. Isabel also shapes environmental practices from a strategic level, playing a role in both IEMA-NZ’s Steering Group and the NZEA Sustainable Events Working Group, formed to drive positive change in the events industry.

    • Diane Stanbra - Founder and Head of Getting Things Done, Rescued Limited
Rescued is leading the multi-billion dollar Upcycled Food market in New Zealand and collaborating with the food and beverage industry to design an Upcycled Food Ecosystem. A member of the Upcycled Food Association (US), XLabs NZ – Circular Economy for Business certified, and participant in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Big Food Redesign Challenge. Diane has a background in finance, business development, customer relationship, sales, and an established industry network.

    • Shirin (Shaz) Seton - Clean Event
Clean Event is an industry leader in event waste management. Working with many of Auckland's major events and festivals to produce the highest levels of recycling and diversion from landfill.

    • Angela Lin - Volunteer & Events Manager, Bike Auckland
Angie has been delivering the popular bike valet programme to provide secure and sustainable travel options for Aucklanders to get to their event from sports matches to annual celebrations like Big Gay Out.

Thanks also to NZEA for their support and help with communications.

This webinar will be of interest to event sponsors, organisers, sustainability leaders and anyone interested in moving events toward a circular and regenerative future.

Note, this is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion, but more an instigator for action. We hope this will provide you insight, ideas and connections for making progress.
