Join us to learn about - and how to use - the Race Reporting Handbook in your newsroom and in your day-to-day practice as a reporter. The Handbook was commissioned by the Australian Human Rights Commission, and produced by Media Diversity Australia. Its authors are Jenae Tien and Karina Hogan.

SPEAKERS:

  • Mariam Veiszadeh is inaugural CEO of Media Diversity Australia. She is an award-winning human rights advocate, lawyer, diversity and inclusion practitioner, contributing author and media commentator. Mariam was previously in a management position at the Diversity Council of Australia, founded the Islamophobia Register Australia, and has held multiple board positions. She has delivered a TEDxSydney talk advocating for greater cultural diversity, was featured as an Anti-Racism Champion by the Australian Human Rights Commission. Mariam has worked as radio commentator for the ABC radio and as a columnist for Fairfax media. With many accolades to her name including the Fairfax Daily Life 2016 Woman of the Year, the 2015 Westpac Woman of Influence and Welcoming Australia Life Member Award in 2021, Mariam is renowned for influencing positive change both in the workplace and in society more broadly. Mariam was born in Afghanistan and came to Australia in 1990 with her family as a refugee.
  • Jenae Tien is a multidisciplinary consultant and award-winning media producer with over 10 years in the industry, including a 6 year tenure at the ABC. She is also the co-producer of the Bloodlines to Country podcast with Karina Hogan. She is committed to fostering cultural allyship, integrating lived experience and evidence- based approaches to cultural inclusion through the creation of resources and ethical storytelling initiatives. Jenae is the Director of Expand Today, a multifaceted organisation that operates under Expand Your Library and Expand Your Mind Consulting, and is author of ‘Deck Of Diversity’, an educational resource which has been nationally recognised.
  • Karina Hogan is a proud Aboriginal and South Sea Islander woman with ancestral ties to Bunjalung country. With over 13 years of experience in the media space and over 10 years in governance, she is a highly respected Journalist, Broadcaster, Content Producer, Non-Executive Director, and Businesswoman. One of Karina's most notable achievements was her involvement as an impact producer for the Logie award-winning documentary, Incarceration Nation. Karina is also a committed Non-Executive Director for ATSICHS Brisbane, The Children’s Hospital Queensland and Junior Engineers and most recently was appointed Chair for National dance board BLAKDANCE.
  • Elias Clure is a reporter with ABC’s 7.30 program. He has been a journalist for over a decade and has spent time as a reporter in Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin and Canberra. He was awarded the ABC’s Andrew Olle scholarship in 2021.
