    On Thursday 25th August from 12-2pm, Young Mining Professionals Brisbane will host our first online legal lunch and learn event on two topics:

    1. Preparing and Negotiating Contracts (30 minutes)

    From the perspective of the mine owner / project sponsor, this session will look at:

    • the typical contracts involved in developing and operating a mine;
    • the key stages / inputs and issues when preparing the tender documents and negotiating the contract; and
    • key commercial and contractual issues and risks to consider.

    2. What you need to know – Competition Law 101 (30 minutes)

    Competition law compliance is important with serious penalties for businesses and individuals for non-compliance.  This session will provide you with:

    • an overview of the key competition law prohibitions
    • an overview of what you can do to ensure ongoing competition compliance
    • practical tips to avoid scrutiny by your competitors and the ACCC


    Our presenters on the day are David Harley and Joanne Jary, Partners at Holding Redlich, Brisbane.


    David is a front-end projects partner who has worked across the mining, energy and infrastructure sectors. His experience for sponsors and owners in mining projects covers the contracts and commercial arrangements for mine development and operations, including construction / maintenance, mining fleet procurement and logistics. He has worked on major coal and iron ore projects for clients ranging from Xstrata Coal to Fortescue Metals, Mitsubishi Development and Batchfire.

    Joanne has 20 years’ experience in large scale and complex commercial and regulatory litigation and competition law advisory in both private practice and as a Senior Executive for the Queensland Government. Joanne specialises in competition law, dispute resolution and litigation, public and administrative law and commercial and regulatory litigation. Joanne has extensive experience in advising businesses and Government on their competition law compliance obligations including advising entities with significant market power regarding claims of misuse of their power. Joanne is also a member of the Law Council of Australia’s and Queensland Law Society’s Competition and Consumer Law Committees.

    Within the two hour session, there will be time allocated for Q&A.
