Webinar: Rethinking Gut Health: The Intestinal Epithelial Cell - Nature’s Mission Control on Wednesday 15th September 2027 - 7:00pm - 8:30pm AEST
Where: Online
CPE: 1.5 CPE points
Despite an explosion of interest in the human microbiome, many practitioners continue to experience inconsistent clinical outcomes when using antimicrobial protocols, probiotics, prebiotics and gut-healing supplements. Could we be focusing on the wrong therapeutic target?
This webinar explores a rapidly emerging shift in our understanding of gut ecology—one that places the intestinal epithelial cell (IEC), rather than the microbiome itself, at the centre of clinical decision-making. Recent research suggests that the host plays a far greater role in shaping the gut ecosystem than previously recognised, challenging the traditional "bug-centric" approach to digestive health.
Drawing together current evidence from nutrigenomics, mucosal immunology and gut physiology, Dr Christine Houghton will explain how the intestinal epithelium communicates continuously with both the immune system and the microbiota through sophisticated signalling pathways. Particular attention will be given to the role of Nrf2 activation, host cellular defence mechanisms, Toll-like receptor signalling and the emerging clinical application of immunobiotics as strategies to restore gut homeostasis.
Importantly, the webinar moves beyond theory to provide clinicians with a practical framework for improving patient outcomes by supporting the host's own physiological control systems rather than relying solely on direct microbial manipulation.
Attendees will leave with a fresh perspective on gut ecology, a deeper understanding of the intestinal epithelial cell as the true "Mission Control" of the gut ecosystem, and practical concepts that can be immediately integrated into clinical practice.

Presenter: Christine Houghton PhD.,BSc.,Grad.Dip.Hum.Nutr.
Christine Houghton enjoys a fulfilling career in Nutritional Medicine spanning several decades. A Registered Nutritionist, she holds a PhD in Nutrigenomics and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Queensland, together with a Graduate Diploma in Human Nutrition from Deakin University, Victoria. She is the Founder and Faculty Head of the Institute for Nutrigenomic Medicine and is the CEO of Cell-Logic, a research-based developer of nutrigenomic formulations.
As a published author and educator, she is the developer of Foundations in Gut Ecology & Metabolic Modulation (G.E.M.M.) Her research projects include the application of phytochemicals in human gut, brain and metabolic health, principles that underpin the G.E.M.M. Protocol and the evidence-based clinician series, Conversations in Nutrigenomic Medicine.
She holds professional memberships with the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA), the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and the International Society of Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics (ISNN). Her most recent academic publication, The Rationale for Sulforaphane Favourably Influencing Gut Homeostasis and Gut-Organ Dysfunction: A Clinician's Hypothesis reveals some remarkable clinical outcomes in inflammation-based chronic diseases.
She is acknowledged as an authority on clinical nutrigenomics and the nuanced roles of phytochemicals as potent signalling molecules beneficially influencing human health.
