Webinar: Towards a Bee and Pollinator Friendly ACT - Australian Pollinator Week 2026
Description
Bees and other pollinators are essential to our food security, biodiversity and the health of our ecosystems. Yet they face increasing threats from habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change and emerging diseases, including the devastating impact of Varroa mites on honeybees.
During Australian Pollinator Week, join Dr Charlie Blumer from ACT for Bees + Other Pollinators to explore why we urgently need a coordinated, whole-of-community approach to protecting these vital species.
ACT for Bees and Other Pollinators is advocating for a Bee and Pollinator Friendly Territory, bringing together government, conservation organisations, community groups, educators and researchers to create a healthier, more resilient environment for pollinators and people. Charlie will introduce the proposed integrated strategy, which focuses on:
Habitat protection and restoration – creating connected, diverse, flowering landscapes that support pollinators year-round.
Biodiversity-sensitive urban planning – embedding pollinator-friendly principles in the design and management of our urban and natural environments.
Reducing pesticide impacts – promoting safer practices that protect pollinators and other beneficial insects.
Education and community engagement – inspiring schools, communities and organisations to take meaningful action.
Monitoring and citizen science – building our understanding of pollinator populations and their changing needs.
Collaboration and partnerships – aligning local action with the Australian Pollination Strategy and ACT Government policies.
This presentation is an opportunity for members of conservation and environmental organisations across the ACT to explore how our shared efforts can contribute to an integrated, Territory-wide strategy. By working together, we can strengthen existing conservation initiatives, connect habitats across our landscape and help make the ACT a leader in pollinator protection.
Healthy pollinators mean healthy ecosystems, resilient food systems and a thriving natural world. Join us to discover how we can work together towards a Bee and Pollinator Friendly ACT.
About Dr Charlie Blumer
Charlie Blumer was trained in zoology and epidemiology, before working as a public servant in the health area. Now retired, he keeps bees and enjoys being present in his own little ecosystem, watching it all happen. However, he does also get out, and out of his comfort zone, to spread the word in various fora. Charlie has a background in ecology, is Vice President of the Canberra Region Beekeeping Club, and is active on the ACT for Bees and Other Pollinators committee.
