Description

We have seen overseas how far-right groups have targeted trans people in public debate to create division and fear, and the same tactics are now being tried here. Meanwhile, civil society organisations outside the LGBTQIA+ space are struggling to show up for trans justice when their communities don’t see the connections to their own work.

Research from Fair Agenda shows the majority of people aren't hostile, just genuinely uncertain or unaware about trans issues. Our best chance to build public support for trans justice is welcoming that uncertainty as a learning journey, through conversation and communications, not just in trans-specific spaces but throughout our work as social change organisations and movements.

This webinar unpacks the messages that work, and how to apply them.

Lineup

  • Renee Carr | Executive Director and Co Founder, Fair Agenda

Renee Carr | Executive Director and Co Founder, Fair Agenda

Renee (she/her) is a campaigner and strategist passionate about growing movements for change. At Fair Agenda she has led campaigns that have: helped secure national reform to address sexual violence in universities; stopped almost a billion dollars of cuts to parental leave; and helped decriminalise abortion in Queensland, NSW and South Australia. In 2015 she was named as one of Australia's '100 Women of Influence'. Before co-founding Fair Agenda, Renee was part of the team that led The End of Polio campaign to secure $118 million in additional funding from countries for global polio eradication efforts. Renee holds a Bachelors of Law and Arts from the University of Melbourne.

  • Amy Barrett | Senior Campaign Manager, Fair Agenda

Amy Barrett | Senior Campaign Manager, Fair Agenda

Amy Barrett (she/her) is an experienced campaigner with a passion for building people-powered movements. She joined Fair Agenda excited to campaign for improved access to abortion care. The anti-rights movement had other ideas. She has since led Fair Agenda’s response to attacks on abortion rights in South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, mobilising thousands of people to counter well funded efforts to wind back abortion rights. Amy also delivers Trans justice training, helping feminists and other allies have persuasive conversations with people who have encountered anti-trans misinformation. Before Fair Agenda, Amy worked across the human rights and environment movements, leading teams in community organising, fundraising, campaigning and data strategy. She has mobilised large supporter bases, built activist networks across Australia and internationally, and trained thousands of activists in Australia and overseas. At the heart of Amy’s work is a deep belief that ordinary people, acting together, can overcome powerful vested interests and change the world.
