Event description

Webinar: Monday, 7 December at 3.30-5.30pm. Presented by Paul Dillon, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia Pty Ltd

Vaping (the use of electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes or 'vapes') has become a growing issue for many schools across the country. Some of the incidents that schools have had to deal with in recent times include the following:

  • finding a group of Year 7 girls vaping in a toilet
  • Year 9 students leaving school grounds at lunchtime to vape in a local park
  • busting two Year 12 boys who were importing vaping pods from China in bulk and supplying them at great profit to students from other schools in the local area
  • suspending a number of Year 10 students caught vaping on a school bus on the way to an excursion

Vaping is a new phenomenon, with the first e-cigarette being invented in 2003. There continues to be a debate around whether the use of these devices can assist smokers quit their habit or are simply a 'gateway' to smoking for young people. As such, when students are confronted when caught with these devices they can be met with comments like "But it's only vaping" or "At least I'm not smoking" and teachers have no idea how to respond. Clearly something is happening in this area and many schools are finding this a particularly challenging issue.

Designed with the classroom teacher in mind, this webinar will provide up-to-date and accurate information on the use of e-cigarettes and vaping. Paul Dillon will also provide some simple ideas on how to talk with school-based young people on this topic using a 'strengths-based approach'.
