Marine plastic pollution is one of the most significant threats facing our oceans.
In this webinar, Marine Ecologist Dr. Nina Wootton explores how plastics and microplastics move through marine ecosystems, their impacts on marine food webs, and the risks they pose to both ecosystem and human health.
Dr. Wootton works alongside national partners and collaborators to improve how the benefits of coastal ecosystem restoration are measured and valued, to develop practice approaches that integrate ecological, social, cultural, and Indigenous values and perspectives into environmental accounting.
Dr. Wootton is committed to making marine science engaging and accessible, particularly through outreach initiatives such as Toys for Turtles and Finding the Fab Five. These programs are delivered in collaboration with researchers, educators, and students to schools across South Australia and the Northern Territory, inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
The session aims to provide participants with valuable insights into the science of marine microplastics and to highlight the importance of research, collaboration, education, and community engagement in protecting our oceans for the future.

Dr. Nina Wootton
Dr. Nina Wotton is a marine ecologist and post-doctoral researcher in the Southern Seas Ecology Laboratories. She works broadly across environmental issues in the marine space, including science communication and education. Currently, she is working across multiple projects to do with marine plastic pollution, as well as recently enhancing her research in blue carbon and restoration. She also has strong skills and passion for communicating science effectively, and enjoys sharing her research with stakeholders, students and the general public.
