Event description

TWO SESSION WORKSHOP SERIES:

Session 1: 1:00PM-3:00PM, Thursday, 24th April, 2025

Session 2: 1:00PM-3:00PM, Thursday, 1st May, 2025

Do you want to create a website to showcase your research or professional work but unsure where to start? While platforms like WordPress or Wix are excellent for feature-rich websites, they can be more complex than needed for a personal site – and may include unwanted advertisements or branding.

There's another option! This workshop provides an introduction to building your own website, giving you full control over your online presence. Designed for researchers, students, and anyone wanting a personal website, this workshop will guide you through creating a simple website, and publishing it online using the free GitHub platform.

In two practical workshops, you will learn the essential skills:

  • Understanding Websites: Learn the basic structure of web pages and how websites function.
  • Styling Your Website: Understand how to style your website, including changing colors, layout and other visual elements.
  • Publishing Your Website: Learn the straightforward steps to host your website for free using GitHub, making it accessible to a global audience.

By the end of this workshop series, you will have a functional website to promote your research, present your portfolio, or establish your online presence – with complete creative control. No prior coding knowledge is needed – just bring your laptop and curiosity!

Facilitator:

Dan Tran is a Software Developer at DCS, as well as the UQ node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S). Dan works on a range of projects to support different research groups within both DCS and ADM+S. His work leverages computational techniques and designs to create user-friendly web, desktop and mobile applications to support the data gathering, storage, extraction and analysis for social science research, ranging from welfare rights to alcohol advertisement on social media platforms.

VENUE INFORMATION:

The easiest way to approach the building is from Staff House Road. There is an access ramp on this side of the building with bike parking to the left.

As you enter the building on Level 2, you will see Boeing to your left and a small staircase around the corner to the right. Take the staircase up one flight to reach level 3. The DCS office will be straight ahead. Go left in the direction of the red arrow in the below photo to access the office space via the main entry door.
