Weedy Weaving- make a small basket out of Cats Claw Vine

Event description

Come join us at our yarning circle for a relaxing morning of weaving!

We will be using cut Cats Claw vine from the biocontrol facility to make a small basket.  Cats Claw is a destructive environmental weed, however is wonderful to weave with!

Sandy, our weaving teacher, is a lifelong maker and artist who enjoys the challenge of taking ordinary materials and making them into something new. She is currently studying in the Bachelor of Visual Arts Program and QCAD. Study has led her to find deep satisfaction in creating sculpture as she explores the ideas which arise as she creates. Sustainable art is an opportunity to create with care for the environment, others and ourselves and we explore, make and listen in the process.

This workshop is an opportunity to learn the simple art of basket weaving using a technique which has been employed by willow basket makers for centuries. The cat's claw may be a weed but it's a sturdy plant which can be used to create baskets.

During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about Landcare's cats claw management program and experience the landscape being rehabilitated around the yarning circle. There will be plenty of time to make a simple basket and the opportunity to enjoy being present during the process.

Participants are asked to wear closed in shoes, bring a hat and water bottle along with sunscreen as weather permitting we will be outside for the morning.
