Event description

Discover the relaxing and mindful art of wet felting with Sonja Fernando!

In this workshop, we will take some time to find creative flow and learn to felt sculptural 'vessels' - these are made from wool fibres and can be as thick and sturdy or as airy and ethereal as you choose.

Heading home you will have created a sculptural piece you created using your hands, your imagination and your ancestral memories.

The journey of creating forms using wet felting is stepping back in time: Some of the earliest evidence of wet felting can be found in Asia. In Mongolia and Tibet nomadic herders discovered the insulating properties of felted wool for their clothing and tents. In ancient Egypt, wet felting was employed in the creation of clothing and furnishings. Similarly, the Sumerians, who inhabited southern Mesopotamia around 4500 BC, are believed to have been skilled felt-makers, and used the fabric for a variety of applications. Then in the following centuries, the Celts and shortly after the European artisans perfected their methods and created exquisite pieces, often richly coloured as the art of dying came into prevalence.
