FREE Ramsar Week 2026 event

Walk with us on Country to listen and learn about the significance of wetlands to Wadawurrung People. This event will focus on the Lake Connewarre wetland complex as part of the Bellarine Peninsula and Port Philip Ramsar site.

The Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar site is a series of wetland environments of international significance located on the western shoreline of Port Phillip Bay between Melbourne, Geelong, and the Bellarine Peninsula. These wetlands are of immense cultural significance and provide habitat for endangered species like the Orange-bellied Parrot, Growling Grass Frog and numerous migratory shorebirds. Wetlands are among the world’s most productive environments and are cradles for biological diversity.

You will learn of the history of the wetlands and their connections to the broader landscape from both an ecological and cultural perspective. Wadawurrung People have nurtured and cared for wetlands for tens of thousands of years and continue to protect these precious areas today.

Note:

This event will involve walking on unsealed tracks and uneven terrain. Wear appropriate, closed-toe shoes. Participants will be required to self-drive between locations for this tour. GPS locations will be shared closer to the event.

If the weather becomes unfavourable or if Extreme or Catastrophic Fire Danger Ratings are declared, the event will be cancelled and participants will be notified as soon as possible.

What to bring:

Wear closed toe shoes, and bring plenty of water. Dress appropriately for the weather and be sun smart – wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
