What's up with this Gully? A model to guide management options
Event description
The impact of eroding gullies across landscapes is a cumulative legacy for downstream habitats and waterways.
So what makes a gully erode? How can we better understand erosion processes to design management management options that remediate the surrounding land or reduce erosion??
These questions have underpinned an ongoing body of modelling work that Melanie Roberts has undertaken as a Queensland Water Modelling Network Fellow in a collaboration between the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University and the Department of Environment Science and Innovation.
As a dedicated mathematician Melanie is equally passionate about making the application of the gully models match real world needs and support practitioners in their efforts to remediate and reduce the impact of eroding gullies.
In this online chat we will explore:
- What makes up a Gully model?
- How you can use the model to run experiments?
- What management comparisons can be undertaken
Joining the conversation we have Mark Waud from Healthy Land and Water who used the model MERGE to evaluate some local gully restoration measures.
In this online event we will take the conversation beyond the mechanics of the model by unpacking the "science to practice "benefits of working alongside a modelling tool to explore:
- How do on-ground needs feed into modelling design and vice versa?
- How can science inform, guide and shape practice needs in this area?
- How this work at a gully scale may be considered at a regional and catchment scale
Plus your questions from the listeners can also broaden the discussion on the day.
