What They Carried: Objects of Survival - A FutureGen event
Description
Join us for a special evening exploring the Melbourne Holocaust Museum’s special exhibition What They Carried, hosted by FutureGen, the Museum’s community of next-generation supporters.
What They Carried explores the personal objects Holocaust survivors carried with them through persecution, displacement and survival. From the ordinary to the deeply significant, each object offers an intimate connection to a life lived through one of history’s darkest periods, and speaks to themes of loss, resilience, survival and rebuilding.
At this event you will hear directly from those with personal connections to some of the artefacts featured in the exhibition, as they share the stories, memories and histories held within these objects.
Together, we will reflect on the stories behind these objects and what they reveal about memory, identity, belonging and the enduring human capacity to survive and rebuild.
We are honoured to hear from Rodney Hampel, grandson of Andre (Avram) Zelig; Lauren Hampel, granddaughter of Celina Wald-Widawski; and siblings Jessica and Daniel Taft, grandchildren of Anna (Andzja) Gersztynowicz, as they share the personal stories behind the objects featured in the exhibition and reflect on their families' experiences of survival, memory and rebuilding.
What They Carried: Objects of Survival will be open from 6:30pm.
