Biography - Ronnie Grammatica
Ronnie Grammatica is a photomedia artist based on Dunghutti land in Crescent Head, NSW. Originally from Italy, Grammatica relocated to Australia in 2014, where his photographic practice has evolved into an exploration of Australian identity—both as a means to understand his own heritage and to engage with the cultures that make up this diverse landscape. A graduate of Bauer, Italy's oldest photography school, he trained within a tradition deeply influenced by the Bauhaus movement and its emphasis on the intersection of art, society, and technology.
Grammatica’s work is grounded in his background in graffiti and his fascination with urban human intervention. While he finds beauty in the natural world, it is the layers of human influence within urban landscapes that captivate him most. For Grammatica, there is a clear distinction between a beautiful image and a good image—an image that speaks, communicates, and tells a story.
Grammatica has exhibited extensively in regional galleries across NSW, including solo exhibitions like 200 Years On at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo (2020), and at prominent venues such as 107 Projects and Firstdraft Gallery. He has been part of major group exhibitions, such as So Hot Right Now Now Now at Firstdraft Gallery (2022), and the Head On Photo Festival (2021), and was featured in the Cementa and Arts Out West Regional Artist Mentoring Program.
His work has also been commissioned by Port Macquarie Hastings Council and Mid Coast Council, and he was named a finalist in prestigious awards such as the STILL: Still Life National Award (2017) and the 67th Blake Prize (2022). In 2023, Grammatica participated in Regional Futures, a statewide program focused on the evolving challenges faced by regional communities, culminating in a group exhibition at Casula Powerhouse Museum.
In 2024, he exhibited in Halfway at Yarrila Arts and Museum, alongside some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, including Reg Mombassa, Gerwyn Davis, and Blak Douglas. Through these varied and impactful projects, Grammatica continues to examine the complex relationships between identity, culture, and community, all while engaging deeply with the ongoing dialogue around the future of the regions.
