Description

WHEN CONVERSATION TURNS TO SUICIDE

Learn to use the Alternatives to Suicide approach in your work or community

When Conversation Turns to Suicide is a 16-hour training for peer support workers, service providers, family members, friends, first responders, and anyone else who wants to build skills and understanding in effectively supporting those with suicidal thoughts.

Training Topics:
  • Paradigm shifts needed in suicide support and how to help

  • Trauma, losses of power and control, and their relationship to suicide

  • Alternatives to Suicide framework for support

  • Ways to share power as a supporter

  • How to influence change in suicide prevention policies and beyond

When Conversation Turns to Suicide training is rooted in the ‘Alternatives to Suicide’ approach. It offers an alternative means of support to the more medicalised suicide prevention trainings that emphasise assessment, safety planning, and crisis referrals. Learn more about Alternatives to Suicide here.

WHY HALF DAYS?

We have discussed and explored the possibility of two full days or four half days in a row for this training with previous participants and the trainers. Previous training attendees consistently feedback that the half-days are "full-on", requiring significant attentiveness, empathy and openness to new ideas. Equally, the trainers find the level of holding required from them for longer than half days at a time emotionally demanding. As a result, we have elected to hold the training over two weeks, during half day time slots that are reasonable for anyone from the east and west coasts of Australia and New Zealand to attend.

A FEW REMINDERS

Participants must miss no more than two hours of training content (not including breaks) in order to receive a certificate of completion. Please note that there are significant similarities (as well as significant differences) between this training and the Alternatives to Suicide Group Facilitator training. Although we still require people to follow our attendance guidelines even if they have completed the other training, please be prepared for some overlaps in information offered (although we do find that each group is different and there is still much wisdom to be gained even if similar information is being offered).
