When Politics Makes the Sacred: Suffering, Spirituality, and Power in the Islamic Republic of Iran | Buffett Lecture by Zahra Khoskh Jan
Description
Join us for a Buffett Lecture by Zahra Khoskh Jan, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Buffett Visiting Scholar. Professor Khoshk Jan’s research primarily focuses on “the political sociology of religion,” an interdisciplinary field that examines the mutual influences between religion and politics, including political religion and emerging forms of implicit religion, especially in the modern era.
In this lecture, she will draw on her ongoing book project to examine how political authority in the Islamic Republic of Iran not only draws legitimacy from religion but also actively shapes definitions of the sacred, spirituality, and moral legitimacy. Audience Q&A will follow.
Doors will open at 12:00 p.m., and lunch will begin at 12:15 p.m.
Please note that 720 University Place is not an ADA-accessible space. Increasing physical access to buildings and facilities is a goal of the University, but not all buildings and venues have been updated.
