Description
Working with a client who is suicidal often creates a certain level of anxiety, a sense of personal responsibility or even feel heavy and burdensome. These reactions, are understandable human responses to the dynamics when engaging with a client's suicidality. Added to these reactions are the legal obligations and ethical requirements which regulate different professional codes of practice.
Previous workshops' discussion and issues raised in supervision and debriefing indicate that the cumulative effect of these factors can impact on the professional's practice arising from an unspoken fear is that if a client was to suicide, would a coronial investigation find the professional's practice wanting or even negligent.
This workshop delves into legal and ethical concerns by promoting open and honest dialogue about the challenges professionals face when dealing with suicidal clients. It explores these issues in depth and analyses how reactions and fears can impact responses to suicidal behaviour. Insights from a coronial investigator's perspective on suicide-related deaths will also be offered.
The workshop explores the theoretical foundation that guides the legal and ethical responsibilities related to suicide prevention. It explains what falls within the professional's scope of practice in terms of what is deemed reasonable and safe
The workshop provides participants the opportunity to update their knowledge and to reflect on the implications that these obligations have on their practice. This is achieved by processing the information with the other participants in small group discussions and exercises.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A DAY OF LEARNING WITH AWARD WINNING SUICIDE PREVENTION SPECIALIST, BARRY TAYLOR
Barry has worked in mental wellbeing promotion and suicide prevention/ postvention for 37 years at local, national and international levels. His experience includes advisory committee work, designing and evaluating suicide prevention programmes, writing guidelines and resources and providing technical advice. He has led several firsts in suicide prevention and postvention both in New Zealand and internationally. He has served on several industry advisory groups developing competencies for various levels of practice. He has been an Independent Expert Investigator assisting a Coroner in both New Zealand and Australia. He has also served on the Health and Disability Ethics Committee. In 2016 he was awarded the NSW Mental Health Commissioner’s Community Champion Award for his outstanding contributions. Drawing also on his extensive experience in engaging, assessing and supporting suicidal people from different cultures, age groups,genders and sexualities, he offers practical and time proven approaches to undertaking an effective assessment. As a health sociologist, Barry provides unique insights into the evolving phenomenon of suicide in New Zealand highlighting critical social and cultural determinants. His own lived experience of depression and suicidality enriches the workshop. After years overseas, Barry is passionate about building the knowledge base and capability in New Zealand to effectively respond to the high suicide rate.

Terms for Payment By Invoice
Payment by Invoice is only for NGOs, Government Departments, Te Whatu Ora, PHOs, Schools and tertiary organisations, businesses.By selecting to pay by invoice the organisation agrees to the following conditions:
1. Your place in the workshop is not confirmed until payment has been received. Payment of the invoice must be made within seven days of registering to avoid having your registration cancelled. Late payment fees apply.
2. A Tax Invoice from TaylorMade Training and Consulting will be sent to you separately which will contain bank details for payment.
3. By registering for the workshop, you agree to the cancellation and policy. Organisations who cancel within seven days of the workshop and have not paid the invoice for the outstanding registration fee are still obligated to pay the outstanding debt.

- Registration Scholarships
There is a limited number of partial and full scholarships for those wishing to attend the workshop.
Full scholarships are available for non waged Tangata Whaiora / mental health consumers, carers and volunteers.
Partial scholarships of either 25% or 50% off the registration fee are available for full time tertiary students in health, mental health, addiction, social service or disability related courses.

- Cancellation and Refund Policy
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Workshops can fill quickly. If you are no longer able to attend the workshop please cancel your registration as soon as possible. Workshop cancellation must be done in writing.The following refund policy is strictly adhered to.
Cancellation up to seven days prior to the commencement of the workshop: Full Refund less $35+GST admin fee
Cancellation within seven days prior to the commencement of the workshop: No refund but registration can be transferred to another person. To transfer your registration log on to your registration and update the name and contact details to the new person attending.
Non attendance: No refund
- TMTC Cancellation of the Workshop
TaylorMade Training and Consulting (TMTC) reserves the right to cancel a workshop up to two weeks before it starts if there aren’t sufficient registrations. If cancelled, participants get a refund either by credit for another TMTC workshop (within 12 months) or full refund of their registration fee. Refunds are made to the credit card used or an electronic transfer to a bank account specified by the participant. TMTC isn’t responsible for any other costs incurred by participants due to a workshop cancellation.
