Whether You Fly: An Ekphrastic Poetry Project
Event description
Live Poetry Reading in Response to Julie Heffernan's Solo Exhibition "Whether You Fall"
Saturday January 11, 4:00-6:00 PM
Readings begin at 4:30 PM
Catharine Clark Gallery, 248 Utah St. San Francisco, CA 94103
Join us at Catharine Clark Gallery on January 11th for the closing event of Julie Heffernan's solo exhibition "Whether You Fall."
This special evening features an ekphrastic poetry reading, where distinguished Bay Area poets will share their interpretations of Julie's work.
Ekphrasis, as defined by The Oxford Classical Dictionary, is "the rhetorical description of a work of art." As poet Paul Valéry notes in Edward Hirsch's A Poet's Glossary, "Each work of art demands its response."
Curated by Annice Jacoby and Maw Shein Win, the selected poets’ voices range from the lyrical to the incantatory. Jacoby and Shein Win write that “Julie Heffernan’s paintings cover many layered and topical subjects that beg for a response: feminism, eco-sanity, the destruction and construction of paradise, chaos and isolation, intimacy and beauty, civilization, and ugliness, the past and the present colliding and sliding onto a collective raft of hope. The rich themes engaged the poets with contemporary vigor and contemplation of imagined worlds.”
The evening will feature readings by:
- Adrian Arias
- James Cagney
- Jennifer Futernick
- Heather June Gibbons
- Yiskah Rosenfeld
Admission: $5 (includes commemorative art postcard featuring exhibition artwork and poetry)
