About the Walk:
Whites Hill Reserve is one of the best dry forest birding locations in Magandjin. This bushland is home to over 165 bird species recorded on eBird, as well as other wildlife including koalas. This month users recorded up to 52 species.
We will meet at the gazebo close to the playground amenities where we will go over group introductions and hand out a few LYFER field pads!
Starting from Tallowwood Trail (view track map), we will take a route with easy to moderate difficulty through open eucalypt forest, dry rainforest, and some denser vegetation. We will stop by the pond on site before returning to our starting point to finalise our sightings.
What to Bring:
Water and snacks
Hat and sunscreen
Comfy walking shoes
Insect repellent
BYO binoculars or camera with a telephoto lens - we'll do our best to share sightings if you don't have your own
Your field guide or bird ID app of choice.
Please note: this is a pet-free event.
Additional:
So you're noticing all these birds. Now what? Jot down key details about their colours, size, and behaviour, then when you have a moment, you can flip through your trusty field guide to piece it all together. Don't have a guide just yet? Get help with identification right from your pocket with the Merlin Bird ID app. Feeling confident in your IDs? Contribute to citizen science by logging a complete checklist of our walk with eBird.
Want to go back to the basics? Try birding in-the-moment, the old-school way. Twenty lucky birders will receive their very own field note pad from LYFER to use on our walk - check Insta for details!
Why Join?
Birdwatching is a beautiful way to slow down, connect with nature, and build community. As we appreciate the local avifauna, we also reflect on the histories of this land and our shared responsibilities in protecting it.
This walk takes place on the Stolen, Unceded land of the Yuggera and Turrbal people. We pay our respect to the Traditional Owners and all First Nations folks in our community. We invite attendees to walk with mindfulness and respect.
