Who Pays For Your Prompt? The Human and Environmental Cost of AI Systems | Amnesty Unimelb x MUGHS
Description
The rapid boom of generative AI is often sold to us as seamless innovation and efficiency, but the unseen impact presents enormous data pipelines rooted in mass invasions of privacy, systemic bias, and heavy environmental tolls.
Amnesty Unimelb and MUGHS are teaming up to run an educational workshop for students to critically unpack the hidden human rights and social costs of the technology we rely on every day. We will dive into how major AI systems rely on unlawful web scraping without consent, how they amplify racial and gender biases, and the severe environmental footprint of data centers on marginalized communities.
We will also present a relevant case in which teams will be asked to pitch a solution, with prizes to be won!
